Transportation in Nairobi

Nairobi's transport mix is built around matatus, colorful minibuses that run set routes for cheap, and ride-hailing apps like Uber, Bolt, and Little Cab that give you door-to-door comfort at a fraction of a private taxi. The city also has a commuter rail service with four lines (Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Lukenya, and Limuru) that can save time during rush hour, plus traditional taxis and boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) for short hops. Matatus are the default for locals. Apps are the safer bet after dark. First-timers should download at least one ride-hailing app before landing, cellular data is cheap and you'll avoid haggling. If you do hop on a matatu, look for the route number painted on the side and confirm the fare with the conductor before boarding; rush-hour crowds make pickpocketing easier. Skip unmarked taxis outside hotels, stick to app rides or the official airport taxi desk. For the airport run, the Syokimau commuter train links Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the city center in about 20 minutes and costs a fraction of a taxi. But it only operates during daytime hours. Miss it and the ride-hail pickup zone is clearly signposted outside Arrivals. Pin the "JKIA Terminal 1A" location to avoid confusion with the taxi touts inside the hall.
